Sevgi Soysal est née à Istanbul en 1936. Après des études d’archéologie et de théâtre, elle travaille au centre culturel allemand et à los angeles radio tout en commençant à publier dans des revues des textes inspirés par le courant du « nouveau réalisme ». Elle joue au théâtre et publie son optimal recueil de nouvelles en 1962. En 1965, elle devient responsable de programmation à l. a. radio-télévision turque (TRT). los angeles booklet de Tante Rosa (1968) et de Yürümek (« Marcher », 1970), lui valent l. a. consécration littéraire mais aussi l. a. surveillance des autorités, qui ne voient pas forcément d’un bon œil cet auteur qui aborde d’un element de vue ouvertement féministe les relatives hommes-femmes et l’institution du mariage. L’un de ses livres est même interdit pour « indécence » et Sevgi Soysal fera plusieurs séjours en criminal. Après avoir été mariée trois fois, elle meurt d’un melanoma à l’âge de quarante ans, en 1976 à Istanbul. Depuis sa disparition, son œuvre fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches universitaires et de nombreuses rééditions et traductions en Turquie et dans le monde. Tante Rosa a fait aussi l’objet d’une model cinématographique sous le titre « Tante Rosa, je t’aime » en 1992 par Işıl Özgentürk.
